Sounds-Write

First Rate Phonics

Sounds-Write is a speech to print, structured synthetic phonics program based on the science of reading. It is a multi-sensory, code-oriented, comprehensive approach to literacy. The program is used in many schools across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It is utilised as whole class instruction and in intervention settings.

A speech to print approach takes advantage of what comes naturally to almost all children. They learn to speak and listen naturally without any direct instruction. Speech to print phonics uses what children already know to introduce the writing system.

Sounds-Write teaches the skills, concepts and code knowledge necessary to teach children to read and write from kindergarten onwards. It teaches the complete alphabetic code which includes 175+ of the most common spellings of the 44 sounds that make up the English language.

Sounds-Write provides a free course for parents and carers who wish to get their children off to a good start and find out more about our method. Find the course here.

UFLI Foundations

University of Florida Literacy Institute

UFLI Foundations is an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading. It follows a carefully developed scope and sequence designed to ensure that students systematically acquire each skill needed and learn to apply each skill with automaticity and confidence. The program is designed to be used for core instruction in the primary grades or for intervention with struggling students in any grade.

UFLI Foundations targets the following foundational reading skills:

  • Phoneme blending and segmentation practice

  • Accuracy and automaticity of grapheme-phoneme correspondences

  • Decoding automaticity of words with previously learned concepts

  • Explicit introduction of new concepts

  • Decoding and encoding practice

  • Reading and spelling irregular words

  • Reading and spelling connected text

UFLI Foundations strikes the perfect balance between structure and responsiveness to students’ needs. The program features ample opportunities for students to practice, along with built-in gradual release. It has detailed lesson plans, slides and materials for home practice.

UFLI Foundations is research-based. This means it was developed to align with what decades of reading research has shown to be effective. It is also evidence-based with years of observation and student assessment going into the development of the program. Students who received instruction using UFLI Foundations have been found to make significant gains in phonemic awareness, decoding and oral reading fluency.

I respectfully live, work and run my business on the beautiful land of the Wangal People.

I acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded and strongly support a treaty.

This land always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
